Creating Banner Ads

Most professional designers create ads using Adobe Illustrator or Figma. (We recommend Figma.) There are also several online resources to create ads from templates and/or add animations to designs:

Be sure to check the size of any template you consider and make sure it is available in supported dimensions. Templates for social media ads (Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.) will not work.

Tips for keeping file sizes under 150kb

To ensure that ads load quickly (less than 1/10 of a second) when a user opens a web page, ad networks limit the maximum weight of a banner or HTML5 ad file to 150kb. Even small ads can be heavy files if the assets used to create the ads are heavy. Below are a few suggestions to keep asset weights as low as possible.

  1. Use a program designed for creating banner ads. These programs optimize file sizes automatically.
  2. Use vector graphics (explained here) wherever possible, including your logo.
  3. If you are using jpg of png assets in your design, resize the image to the correct size before importing it into your creative software.
  4. Avoid GIF files. Animations using HTML5 (which can be created in the design programs listed above) are significantly lighter.
